MASTERCLASS Grapevine trunk disease and powdery mildew: biology and management with Dr Richard Smart and Chris Cooper

The masterclass is being held at Shuttleworth College and Warden Abbey Vineyard, Beds on Thursday, 19 September, 2013, starting at 10:00 and finishing at 16:00.

The Masterclass will cover: The major trunk diseases, GTD in the UK, and the rest of the world, How GTD affect vineyard performance, How to recognise GDT in your vineyard, How to manage GTD in your vineyard, How to avoid planting diseased young vines. Also powdery mildew, symptoms and management.

Dr Richard Smart the 'flying wine doctor' has published over 250 articles on vinegrowing, plus the book 'Sunlight into Wine' recognised as the reference book for canopy management. He is also the viticulture editor of the 'Oxford Companion to Wine', edited by Jancis Robinson MW. Richard is currently managing director of Smart Viticulture, an international vineyard consulting busines, and has worked in 27 countries.

Chris Cooper completed a post-graduate diploma in Crop Protection in 1988. He joined the technical sales team of Heath Horticulture based in Kent specialising in fruit crops, but with a particular interest in vines. In 1990 Chris took over the role of Heath Horticultures' Vineyard Specialist and Agronomic advisor. Chris is now part of the Hutchinson's West Midlands fruit team, still specialising in vines. He is the current Pesticides Expert and advisor to the UKVA.
