Dr Richard Smart the 'flying wine doctor' has published over 250 articles on vinegrowing, plus the book 'Sunlight into Wine' recognised as the reference book for canopy management. He is also the viticulture editor of the 'Oxford Companion to Wine', edited by Jancis Robinson MW.
Richard has over 40 years’ experience in wine grape production at many levels. Richard is currently managing director of Smart Viticulture, an international vineyard consulting business, and has worked in 27 countries. Many of these have been cool climate wine regions, including upstate New York, New Zealand and Tasmania. Richard has been much involved in the projected development of the Tasmanian wine sector.
His publication list attests to his research experience and also his substantial contribution to wine sector trade journals, both in Australia and in California. His articles are popular and widely read and span both technical issues and those of an industry development nature.
Richard has recently moved to Cornwall and brings an extensive international experience to the position of WineSkills Sustainability mentor. He has long been interested in sustainable viticulture and has written articles expressing his opinion as to how some production processes are over-promoted, and as to how the wine sector at large has failed to acknowledge the carbon challenge.
