MASTERCLASS - Effective pest and Disease Control in Vineyards: Improved Management and Spraying Technique
The masterclass is being held at Wine Studies Centre, Plumpton College on Monday, 29 April, 2013, starting at 10:00 and finishing at 16:00.
The UK is a cool climate region growing vines under comparatively high disease pressures. This requires excellent management skills, to understand disease biology, create effective control programmes and apply pesticides effectively. Cost of production, quality and yield are common issues and this Masterclass will be delivered by two world renowned experts given by experts, will be invaluable.
It will cover:
• Improving spraying techniques and reducing drift
• Timeliness of application for better disease and pest control
• New developments in sprayer design, and ways to modernise existing sprayers
• The use of disease biology for providing the scientific bases for control strategies
• Practical, integrated approaches to disease management using cultural, chemical and biological options
• The activities of conventional and organic fungicides
• The management of pesticide resistance
Dr Andrew Landers is from the UK, but joined Cornell University in 1998, the Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva. He directs the application technology program, investigating the use of engineering solutions to provide safer spraying. He believes in a multi-disciplinary approach to pesticide application, and is author of a book entitled Effective Vineyard Spraying, which now available.
Dr Wayne Wilcox is Professor of Plant Pathology at Cornell University’s New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva. His professional focus is on the applied biology and management of fungal diseases of grapevines.
