Tree guards

These can be either rigid grow tubes or polythene sleeves. They are placed on the plant after plantation and secured to the supporting stake.

Advantages & disadvantages to using tree guards
Advantages Disadvantages
  • Increases growth rate dramatically → earlier crop
  • Reduced drought stress
  • Protection from pests (disease?) and herbicides
  • Suppression of lateral growth
  • No need to tie up plants as they grow
  • Cost of purchase, application and removal
  • Risk of shoot burn in high temperatures (35 – 40°C)
